Beautiful Alexandria

We are so glad that Alexandria figured as the last stop in our itenary - for we discovered that this place is so un-Egyptic! Housing a completely different atmosphere than the rest of the country, Alexandria seems to be lifted out of the pages of Greece. The Mediterranean Sea that separates Alexandria from the rest of Europe (=Greece) leaves you with thoughts about the channel that the Greeks used to take as a cross-over to their land.

The Mediterranean, unless seen is quite unbelievably blue and takes your breath away. No wonder Alexander planned to settle down at this place.

Relaxation is the only thing that comes to your mind when you gaze at the sea in this port-city.

It is very difficult to miss the similarity of Alexandria with our good old Bombay.

Alexandria could be the coolest place to sip that cola beside the beach, yet it is very much a historic place. The most notable of course is Pompeii. It was here that Caesar ransacked the city and placed the traitor Pompeii's head atop the pillar - thus earning its name.

Beside the Pompeii pillar.
I guess nobody left this city without asking the most obvious question - where on earth was Alexander buried? Our guide gave us the most diplomatic answer - it is buried somewhere beneath the city - layers of civilization has evolved above it ever since. Hence the chances of unearthing The Great's tomb is close to zero. I couldn't agree more. Let the man be remembered for his amazing conquests and for founding this incredible city. And let him rest in peace in the city he loved most.
